Handfasting Ceremonies

Praying

Handfasting is a unique and ancient tradition, dating back thousands of years to the Celts. I can create and incorporate a variety of handfasting elements to your wedding, vow renewal or friendship bond to suit both of you. Like other celebrant-led ceremonies, the event can be created to suit your preferences, including location. If you’re searching for a handfasting celebrant who understands your unique personalities, then look no further!

What is handfasting?

Handfasting an old Pagan tradition. During a handfasting ceremony, the couple both declare their intent to enter into a union, their hands are clasped and fastened together with a cord. The handfasting knot that is tied is a symbolic representation of oneness between the couple. In a show of unity, they become bound to each other.

Originally, handfasting was more like a betrothal or a trial marriage. This gave the couple a chance to see if the marriage would work for a year. Today, Wiccans and Pagans are not alone in embracing handfasting as a part of their wedding or civil ceremony. A handfasting in the modern world is a ceremonial sign of a commitment for “as long as love shall last.”

Are they legal in the UK?

Handfasting does not make or break the legality of the marriage or civil partnership. It can be incorporated into any ceremony, in the same way, that a ring exchange can. If you decide to hold a handfasting ceremony, you still must take the proper steps to ensure that your marriage is legally recognised.

Where can a handfasting ceremony be held?

Traditionally, handfasting is usually held outdoors, amongst nature and with guests standing around the couple in a circle of love. However, like other celebrant-led ceremonies, the event can be created to suit your preferences, including location. Whether you choose an outdoor location such as a woodland forest, or an indoor one in a wedding venue is completely up to you!
